Book Review

Star Trek: Picard: The Art and Making of the Series

I never thought I’d be a person who enjoyed coffee table books, but I’m starting to build up quite a collection. Some are better than others, but Titan Books is on kind of a roll with their Star Trek coffee table books.

Thoughts

Admittedly, I’m writing this about 4 months after I finished reading it. So I would encourage you to listen to the Literary Treks podcast episode linked above.

As coffee table books go, this one is very nice. There are a lot of great photos, original concept sketches, and overall great behind-the-scenes information.

The major thing this book lacked for me was that it didn’t help tie the seasons together like it could have. The series itself, to me, felt very disjointed from season to season. It felt like there was a different show runner each season. What a minute – there was! The book really doesn’t address that very much. I felt it could have at least attempted to discuss how each show runner honored what came before or why they went certain directions. It could have also helped to close the loop on unanswered questions from each season. Were there deleted scenes or dropped story elements? The people want to know!

In the end, I ended up giving this 4 out of 5 stars. The overall layout of the book is great and is packed with information, despite what I felt it was lacking. The photos are stunning and this is just a great book to have if you’re a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation and/or Star Trek: Picard.
