Thoughts

This was a fantastic way to get back into David Mack’s Dark Arts series. I read the first book, The Midnight Front, over a year ago and was thinking about getting into the second book, The Iron Codex. When I looked at the series on Goodreads, I discovered this story set during the events of the first book as a sort of prequel to the next.

This is a short, action-packed story that got me way hyped to get into the next book. Having been so long since I’d read the first book, I was concerned I would be completely lost as to how the magick in this series works as well as the various characters and story elements from the first book.

This novelette does a fantastic job of quickly resetting the stage for someone like me. I was up-to-speed in no time and was along for the ride as Anja Kernova, a Russian-born karcist (sorceress), escaped the clutches of the Red Star.

It was short. It was fast-paced. The action was great! 5 out of 5 stars from me and now I’m off to get into The Iron Codex!
